Introduction and Itinerary

 

A Commemorative Run to celebrate the 50th Anniversary by a Jaguar XK120 of the establishment of an Open Road World Record in the Northern Territory was conducted by the Jaguar Car Club of Victoria, sponsored by the Australian Council of Jaguar Clubs.

Jaguar XK120, chassis number 660569, the actual car that set the record, lead fifty Jaguars, mostly built between 1948 and 1966, in convoy from Mindil Beach Car Park, Darwin on the morning of the 50th Anniversary, Thursday 2nd August 2001, at 09:00.

Ian Hissey, representing the Jaguar Drivers Club of Australia XJS Register, went in support of the event. While the majority of entrants trucked their cars to Darwin and back from Alice Springs, Ian drove, for after looking at the map of Australia, it soon became evident that the best route to Darwin was firstly to Adelaide, then Albany, Perth, Monkey Mia and Broome to Darwin. Home from The Alice has to obviously be via Mt Isa, Normanton, Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, and Brisbane to Sydney.

 

This is Ian's story of his trip in support of this event, while also undertaking the first known circumnavigation of Australia by an XJ-SC.
